SEEING THE UNSEEN: ZOOMING IN ON THE STARS FROM MOUNT WILSON
Featuring Speaker Hal McAlister
Featuring Speaker Hal McAlister
Description
Hal McAlister, Regents Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at Georgia State University and former CEO of the Mount Wilson Institute, will tell the story of how in the 1920s Mount Wilson astronomers lifted the arcane field of stellar interferometry into a functioning technique for measuring diameters of stars. That landmark achievement, buttressed by many individuals on Mount Wilson and elsewhere around the world would lead to the great success of the CHARA Array, which is today producing spectacular images of stellar surfaces and phenomena.
Evening Schedule:
- The night begins at 5:30 PM with a talk given by our featured speaker.
- Immediately after the talk, there will be time to picnic at the tables provided. Bring your own food, or order dinner from the food truck that will be available.
- Once it is dark, attendees can view the night sky until 11:30 PM through both the 60- and 100-inch telescopes (you can leave at any point in the evening).
- The Los Angeles Astronomical Society will have its telescopes set up around the grounds for viewing different night sky objects.
