Description

DUE TO PREDICTED INCLEMENT WEATHER, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.

Mt. Wilson Observatory and the California Art Club join forces to celebrate the marriage of science and the visual arts with an Observatory Open House, an all day Paint/Sculpt-out, a display of selected works of art from the “Mars, An Artistic Mission” exhibit, followed by our Saturday Evening Talks & Telescopes night (ticketing required - see link for registration) with a lecture by the co-chairs of the California Art Club’s new Cosmic Chapter, painter William Stout and astronomer Dr. Laura Danly.

DAYTIME EVENTS (FREE)

Open House (10 AM - 4 PM |  FREE):

The Observatory-wide free OPEN HOUSE includes access inside all of the telescope domes, an art exhibit in the Museum, a peek into the Monastery (the dormitory for Observatory staff and visiting scientists), and more! Docents will be available throughout the grounds to answer questions. Explore the historic site where We Discovered Our Place in the Universe!

California Art Club Plein-air Paint/Sculpt-out (10 AM - 4 PM  |  FREE)

There will be plein-air painting and sculpting throughout the Observatory, plus an exhibition of fine art Mars landscapes in the Observatory Museum. Art enthusiasts will have a wonderful opportunity to watch artists at work, as they create new paintings inspired by the breathtaking views of the San Gabriel Mountains that surround Mount Wilson Observatory.  Paint/Sculpt-Outs are held by the CAC at scenic locations throughout the year, allowing both artists and art lovers to gather for some camaraderie as the artists create new works.

Exhibit of selected works from “Mars: An Artistic Mission,” Mount Wilson Observatory Museum  (10 AM - 4 PM  |  FREE)

Art and science have been intertwined since the dawn of civilization. Science, and in particular space exploration, has allowed us to transcend our bodily limitations on Earth, magnifying our creativity in the process, as we are propelled into the cosmos. With Mars: An Artistic Mission, which celebrates the landing of the Mars Perseverance Rover on the Red Planet, we honor the marriage of art and science.

This will be the first time works from the exhibition will be shown in an in-person (not virtual) gallery!  As you explore the exhibit, you will find dazzling Mars-scapes, snapshots of rovers in operation, and ethereal portraits of life beyond our Earthly barrier.
