Description

Mount Wilson's 60-inch Telescope Public Ticket Nights make the remarkable experience of telescope viewing available to visitors not associated with a group. We have set aside a night for individuals to observe the stars with the first large, precision-made reflecting telescope in the world, the one that revolutionized the technology. You will be looking through the historic telescope that astronomer Harlow Shapley used to measure the size of our Milky Way Galaxy for the first time and find our position in it, removing us from the center.

  • This special viewing session is limited to 20 observers, so there will be plenty of time for everyone to look at a significant number of targets.
  • This event allows up to 4 tickets to be purchased by one individual. Tickets may not be sold or otherwise transferred to another person except by gift.
  • This special session runs from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
  • Please visit our website for more viewing session details at: Mount Wilson Public Ticket Nights

Come enjoy an incredible night of astronomy on the largest telescope in the world available for public use.

Be Aware:

  • Tickets are non-refundable.
  • Mount Wilson Observatory is over a mile high with much cooler temperatures and thinner air.  Be prepared with warmer clothing and for stairs to access the telescope observation deck.
  • The telescope domes are not ADA compliant.

COVID-19 Policy:

The Mount Wilson Institute Board of Trustees has instituted the following Covid-19 protocols:

For all events at Mount Wilson Observatory, all attendees must be FULLY vaccinated against COVID-19.  Proof of vaccination will be required at the event check-in.  In addition, masks are required in all indoor areas of the observatory grounds, which include the telescope dome.

  • Proof of vaccination is required in the form of a CDC original or photocopy of your vaccination card or QR code generated by applicable state(s).  Paper or on-phone proof is fine.
  • A negative COVID test will not be accepted, nor will an affirmation of being vaccinated.
  • The applies to each person attending an event; please be sure everyone has their proof prior to driving up the mountain!
